Bartlesville High School is once again a recipient of the Advanced Placement Computer Science Female Diversity Award. Honored schools have taken a critical step toward closing the gender gap in the field of computer science, where women have historically been underrepresented.
Bartlesville had 50% or higher female examinee representation in its AP Computer Science A course in 2022-2023, or the percentage of female examinees met or exceeded that of the school's female population. The school was previously recognized for the same high level of female representation in its AP Computer Science Principles course exams in 2019-2020.
Only seven high schools in Oklahoma earned the recognition for their 2022-2023 exams, and Bartlesville was the only 6A district high school in the state to earn the recognition.
AP Computer Science A students learn to design and implement computer programs that solve problems relevant to today’s society. Female participation nationwide in that course has reached 24,147, a 69% increase since 2017. According to a Google study, 54% of female computer science majors took AP Computer Science A in high school.
Bartlesville High School began offering AP Computer Science Principles in 2016-2017, added AP Computer Science A and Computer Science Essentials in 2017-2018, and then Cybersecurity in 2018-2019. Total computer science enrollment at Bartlesville High School has grown from 43 in 2016-2017 to 146 in 2023-2024.
